NGRI chief suggests three-pronged strategy for water management

Should encourage scientific innovation: INCOIS Director

The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) Director, V.M. Tiwari, called for a three-pronged approach to manage water resource like assessment of water availability, development of hydrological models and scenarios and ensuring that appropriate information reaches decision-makers.

He was explaining the per capita availability of utilisable water in the country and water requirements of both crops and animal rearing at a special lecture delivered at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) as a curtain-raiser for the upcoming India International Science Festival (IISF) being organised in Kolkata, on Thursday.

Dr. Tiwari pointed out that the UN Climate-Change Report has called for a change in the human diet to reduce wastage of water caused by meat consumption and has listed the water footprints of various popular dishes.

Intense exploitation of groundwater, overuse of fertilisers, burning of coal and leaching of metals from coal-ash tailings could lead to contamination of water as it was found in the Ganga basin.

He outlined a conceptual regional scale model for aquifers coupled with a decision support tool at the village-scale and mentioned about the community-based groundwater management in Choutuppal mandal in Telangana as well as the hydrological study of Kazipally industrial area for evaluation of seepages and environmental degradation.

INCOIS Director Satheesh Shenoi, in his welcome address, emphasised the need for encouraging informal scientific recognition and innovation, while elaborating on the usefulness of the IISF-2019 platform.

Vijnana Bharathi secretary Vivekanand Pai appreciated the ocean information services provided by the INCOIS and the performance of the Tsunami Centre.
