New bus depot in IT Corridor to perk up techies

TSRTC has sought five acres to improve services in the IT Corridor

With the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) making serious efforts to improve bus services to the IT Corridor, it is now seeking a land parcel in the area to enhance its infrastructure, cut operational losses and maintain frequency of buses.

In a recent letter to the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, the transport juggernaut made a request to identify and allot a five-acre land parcel. This, it said, would be used to either construct a bus terminal or a depot.

Response awaited

Transport Secretary and TSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Sunil Sharma confirmed to the The Hindu that the corporation is indeed seeking the land parcel.

“We are seeking five acres for improving services in the IT Corridor. The letter was sent recently and a response is awaited,” Mr. Sharma said.

Sources from the TSRTC said Raidurgam has become a crucial area of operations in terms of traffic nodal points.

They also underscored that with traffic congestion in the IT Corridor, especially in and around Mindspace, Bio-Diversity Park Crossroads and Financial District among other areas, it has become imperative to have a terminal point in the area.

They also said a new depot could encourage those travelling to the area to use public transport more often.

Urban transport specialist Prashanth Bachu echoed the TSRTC’s opinion.

“Traffic in Hi-Tec City is largely unidirectional, in the sense that in the morning, traffic is moving into the area and in the evening, out of it. A terminal space here allows the TSRTC to cut losses by reducing dead kilometres, meaning that buses travelling empty to the depot or out of the depot. The buses will be at regular frequency and will not be bunched at a spot at the same time. A terminal point or depot here will have a positive effect on bus frequency,” Mr. Bachu opined.
