National virology meet comes to a close

Virtually attended by over 1,000 delegates from across the world

The three-day national conference on virology titled ‘VIROCON-2021’ concluded here on Monday. The conference with the theme ‘Emerging and Re-emerging Viral Diseases - Climate Change Impacts and Mitigation’ was conducted by the department of Microbiology at AIIMS-Bibinagar under the aegis of Indian Virological Society.

“VIROCON-2021 was organised to promote research in the detection of novel viral pathogens. The conference has become a platform for multi-disciplinary deliberations on the changing scenario of viruses causing diseases in humans, animals, plants, fish, and insects,” informed a press release.

It was virtually attended by over 1,000 delegates from across the world. That the COVID-19 pandemic has raised awareness levels about viruses was highlighted at the conference.

The two-day event comprised plenary lectures by eminent speakers, a special session on SARS-CoV-2, One Health, and joint symposia involving speakers belonging to various specialties of virology.

Professor and head of the department of Microbiology at AIIMS-Bibinagar, Rahul Narang reiterated that the department is now self-reliant and fully equipped to serve the needs of rural Telangana.
