There is more to the disappearance of youngster A. Naresh and the suicide of his wife Swati than what meets the eye.

After getting married on March 25 in Mumbai, Naresh and Swati came to Hyderabad on May 2. Actually, that was not the first time they came to Hyderabad after getting married.

Nearly a month after the marriage, they came to city with the persuasion of elders from both the families and their respective villages. “This was not known to outsiders. In fact, both Naresh and Swati orally decided to get separated during a panchayat held in the presence of elders,” a police officer associated with the investigation of the case said.

Swati’s father Srinivas Reddy wanted his daughter to become a police Sub-Inspector and provided her all facilities to achieve that goal. When she was a teenager, Naresh’s cousin allegedly tried to trap her.

On learning this, Mr. Reddy and other villagers warned that person and took an assurance from his parents that he would not stalk the girl again. While in degree college, she fell in love with Naresh. In the first week of this March, they left their respective houses and went to Mumbai where they got married with the help of Naresh’s friends.

Plea to get them back

Mr. Reddy, along with an elder from Pallerla village and Naresh’s uncle first rushed to Sholapur of Maharashtra where Naresh’s elder sister lived. “They believed Naresh would take shelter there because his brother-in-law was a local leader there and had good contacts,” an investigator said.

Later, they rushed to Mumbai where Naresh’s father lived. But the couple actually didn't go there. Eventually, Swati's family persuaded elders from Naresh side to bring them to Hyderabad. Somehow, they managed to contact Naresh and eventually the latter and his wife Swati came to Hyderabad. “A panchayat was held in the presence of a police officer from Rachakonda Commissionerate and elders from both sides to discuss about the love marriage,” an investigator said.

After prolonged discussions, arguments and counselling, Naresh reportedly told them that he was not interested in Swati. “Angered over his words, Swati tried to spit at him and even tried to snap the ‘mangalsutra’ and throw at him,” a person who was at the ‘panchayat’ told the police.

After that, while Naresh went to Mumbai, Swati was taken to Lingarajupally by her parents. However, after a few days Swati went back to Mumbai without informing her family. This time too, Mr. Reddy persuaded through common friends to send back his daughter to Hyderabad assuring that he would consent to their marriage. “That is when both Naresh and Swati came to Hyderabad on May 2,” a police officer said.
