Tense moments were witnessed at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here on Sunday when two activists of Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) climbed a floodlight tower and threatened to jump off demanding that the Congress party convention being held at the stadium adopt a resolution in support of sub-categorisation of Scheduled Castes in allocation of funds in the SC/ST sub plan bill.
Minutes after PCC president Botcha Satyanarayana concluded his speech, MRPS activists -- Shiva and Laxman -- climbed the tower. Congress supporters, who came to attend the meeting, noticed the activists and alerted the police. Police officials spoke to them over their mobile phones and tried to convince them saying that their demand would be looked into.
After they came down at the conclusion of the Congress convention, the police took them into custody and shifted them to the Saifabad police station. A group of MRPS activists raised slogans against the Congress government for not introducing sub-categorisation in the SC/ST Sub Plan Bill in allocation of funds. As they began raising slogans, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who was speaking at that time, told the party workers to take them away.
Police swung into action and whisked away the workers, who continued to raise slogans. A few minutes later, the police apprehended Telangana advocates for trying to stage a demonstration in front of the stadium protesting the government’s decision to permit prosecution of 24 advocates in connection with different cases booked against them.
Cases were registered against them for allegedly destroying properties on the premises of High Court while undertaking agitation for a separate Telangana State.
