Speakers at a roundtable organised by the Left student unions, SFI, AISF and PDSU, here on Wednesday raised their voice against the State government’s reported move to bring all the colleges in the erstwhile Khammam district under the jurisdiction of Nalgonda-based Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU).
The roundtable resolved to undertake a sustained joint movement to counter the move and to press for the establishment of the long-cherished university in Khammam to make higher education accessible to students of downtrodden sections, especially from the rural and tribal pockets of the district. AISF district secretary J. Ranjith Kumar, SFI district secretary T. Nagaraju, and PDSU district president M. Suresh were among those who addressed the roundtable held at Giriprasad Bhavan. The participants included the representatives of various youth organisations, teachers’ unions, private degree colleges’ management association, CPI (M), CPI and CPI (ML-New Democracy).
The leaders of three student unions questioned the rationale behind the Telangana State Higher Education Council’s reported move to change the affiliation of over 130 degree and PG colleges spread across Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem districts from the Warangal-based Kakatiya University to Mahatma Gandhi University, at a time when the MGU was reportedly grappling with infrastructure and manpower deficiencies.
They said a united movement would be spearheaded by involving all sections of society to exert pressure on the State government to set up a university in Khammam as per its promise.
KU former governing council member Muvva Srinivas Rao, CPI (M) State committee member Ponnam Venkateshwara Rao were among those who attended.
