Modern crematorium in PPP mode to be opened soon

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), in association with Phoenix Foundation, a non-governmental body, has unveiled a modernised crematorium providing a more pleasing ambience at Road No. 45 Jubilee Hills.

Providing a pollution-free environment and amid the chanting of Bhagavad Geeta hymns in the background, the place developed under public, private partnership (PPP) mode also has a cafeteria, wi-fi facility, shower bathrooms, lockers and the latest equipment.

GHMC Commissioner and Special Officer Somesh, who inspected the facility accompanied by his senior officials on Saturday, said that the ‘Mahaprasthanam’ graveyard will be opening very soon and a nominal fee will be collected for performing the last rites.

Claiming that it was the first of its kind in the country, he said the municipal corporation is also planning to come up with 30 more graveyards for which proposals are under process. The graveyard with an area of 3.7 acres has been developed at a cost of Rs. 3 crore.


The Commissioner also pointed out that as the city continues to expand, the civic amenities are under tremendous pressure so also to provide for land sites for crematoria and graveyards. The ‘Mahaprasthanam’ has been developed to provide a clean and green environment with sufficient number of pyres, including an electric pyre, storage rooms, rest rooms, wash rooms, on-site traditional priest, flower arrangement, car parking for about 50 vehicles and many more facilities.

“Our city residents can host their ceremonies with respect, dignity and honour. Most important is the world-class standards with live streaming of the entire process,” he pointed out.
