Reviewing the activities of LIDCAP, Telangana Minister for Industries Jupally Krishna Rao expressed his displeasure at the corporation tasked with the development of leather industry in the State becoming almost defunct.

“All the machinery, sheds and [vast] properties are lying unutilised. There are only security guards at the parks and the number of employees is down drastically due to retirements,” he said during his visit to LIDCAP facility in Gachibowli here.

A press release on the review said there are 13 leather parks in the State – Medak, Nalgonda, Mahboobnagar, Karimnagar, Warangal, and Nizamabad districts.

Instructing the LIDCAP chairman to immediately prepare a report giving time frame for the Corporation’s revival, the Minister called for all files related to its properties after being told that some of the lands were occupied illegally and cases pending in courts. He instructed all cases to be reviewed immediately, convening of a meeting of all concerned officials and a relook into all the agreements pertaining to the properties.

The Minister was told that most of the business being conducted was through consultants and LIDCAP got a percentage for the machinery usage as rent and commission for the amount of sale conducted through various government departments. Mr. Rao, the release said, questioned why the corporation with machinery and know-how is unable to deliver results whereas a consultant who has rented the machinery is able to deliver such huge orders and pay 10 per cent as rental/ machinery usage charges.

Stating that the government was keen on promoting leather industry, he said a Footwear Design and Development Institute is being set up on the campus at an estimated cost of Rs. 115 crore. The Minister instructed the officials to immediately take up renovation of the leather parks.
