This year medical counselling process will be conducted by the Telangana State Council for Higher Education (TSCHE) in collaboration with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences. A government nominee will be also appointed to oversee the counselling process of private medical colleges, senior officials said.

With inspections by special teams of Medical Council of India (MCI) in medical colleges in Telangana expected to continue till July 15, the authorities have made it clear that notification for counselling will be released only after July 20. In all probability, counselling for admissions into medical seats is likely to be held in the last week of July or first week of August, they disclosed.

The decision to issue counselling notification in the later half of July was taken in a meeting between top health officials and higher education officials with Telangana Health Minister C. Laxma Reddy a couple of days ago. While MCI inspections in all five State-run teaching hospitals in TS are over, a few private medical colleges are slated to undergo inspections till July 15. While all the 850 medical seats under Government teaching hospitals have received the green signal from MCI, close to 400 seats under the private medical colleges are yet to get a nod from the governing body. Top health officials said that anything concrete on the number of medical seats, which could be lost by private medical colleges, will only be known after all the MCI inspections are over.

At present, there are 2,100 medical seats in private medical colleges out of which 1,700 belong to non-minority private medical colleges while 400 are from minority medical colleges. According to health officials, the fate of close to 400 medical seats from non-minority private medical colleges is hanging in balance pending MCI inspections. This year, counselling for medical seats will be held in four centres, including two in Hyderabad and one each in Warangal and Vijayawada.
