MCA: BRAOU graduates face problems

February 08, 2012 11:29 am | Updated 11:29 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Teacher aspirants heaved a sigh of relief after the government agreed to recognise the degrees given by the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) for the recruitment but the BRAOU graduates face a similar problem in the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) admissions.

Though these graduates are allowed to take the Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET), they are denied admission in the MCA courses arguing that students need to study in the ‘10 plus two plus three year' format. Most students who complete their degree course from the BRAOU are 10 class dropouts and they complete it after passing an eligibility test conducted by the BRAOU. A section of students who complete their Intermediate in the regular mode and finish the degree from BRAOU, however, do not face any problem if they study Mathematics as one of the subjects in Intermediate.

When BRAOU degrees are recognised on par with any conventional degree and can appear even for Civil Services, why should they be denied MCA admissions is the argument of students seeking MCA admissions.

“The ICET authorities should change their pre-requisite criteria giving a fair opportunity for the open degree students as well,” agrees a senior official in the State Government. “Opportunities should not be denied on mere technicalities.”

BRAOU Vice-Chancellor, P. Prakash said that he will soon write a letter to the A.P. State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) seeking its intervention. He said such issues can be sorted out and hoped that this year BRAOU graduates can take up MCA courses in the State. He reminded that a similar issue was sorted out when the government issued a G.O. allowing BRAOU graduates to take the District Selection Committee (DSC) examinations within four days he writing to the government.

APSCHE Chairman, P. Jayaprakash Rao said that AICTE guidelines are followed in the MBA and MCA admissions and if open degree students have an issue they should bring it to the notice of the AICTE.
