A 40-year-old man allegedly murdered his two septuagenarian grandmothers by attacking them with a sickle at Chengomul village in Pudur mandal of Vikarabad, 60 km from here, the police said on Monday.
The villagers caught the accused Shiva Kumar and handed him over to the police after thrashing him. “Motive behind the double murder is not yet clear. The accused gives conflicting reasons. Looks like he is mentally ill,” Thandur DSP Ravinder Reddy said. Kumar was jobless.
He was married, but his wife deserted him a few years ago. Since then, he was living alone in his house. “Kumar picked up a sickle and attacked his 70-year-old grandmother M. Ananthamma inflicting multiple injuries on her around 5 a.m.,” the DSP said. She was returning to her room after answering nature’s call when he attacked her.
He then dragged her body into the bathroom and later attacked 74-year-old M. Buchchamma. “As she screamed for help, neighbours woke up. On seeing them, he fled the spot,” police said. The villagers shifted the woman to hospital where she died while undergoing treatment after a couple of hours.
Kumar was caught by the villagers after a chase and handed over to police. The two victims were wives of his paternal grandfather’s siblings, the police said.
