The Majlis has demanded early clearance of the long-pending 2,000 MW power project at Shankarpally under the National Thermal Power Corporation to overcome the severe power shortage in Hyderabad. Two more mega power projects of 4,000 MW capacity each are required in the PPP mode to meet the long-term needs of the Hyderabad metropolitan region, including the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR).

These are among several proposals put forth by the Majlis president, Asaduddin Owaisi, when he called on the TRS leader K. Chandrasekhar Rao here on Thursday.

Mr. Owaisi said a separate power plant for the city was absolutely necessary as there was going to be 4,000 unit power shortfall. He suggested setting up of a 440 KV or 800 KV sub-station at Maheshwaram for power supply to the old city. On the water supply front, he wanted early completion of the Godavari phase I project otherwise the city would be in for a severe water shortage in the coming years. For this it was imperative to tackle the bottlenecks relating to project head works in Karimnagar district.

Mr. Owaisi sought allocation of water to the old city areas from both the phase III of Krishna and Godavari phase I. The Majlis leader urged KCR to revive the Rs. 2,075 crore old city package sanctioned by the YSR government in 2006. He wanted Rs. 1000 crore to be released for completion of water supply and sewerage works in the old city.

Law and order

With regard to law and order, Mr. Owaisi wanted the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate to be retained. He wanted the new government to support the Majlis special leave petition against entrusting law and order of Hyderabad to the Governor. He further requested for continuation of the zonal system under the Presidential Order.

The Majlis gave a number of suggestion on minority related issues. The TRS leader is believed to have assured to consult the Majlis before taking any decision on these issues. Mr. Owaisi suggested introduction of a minority sub plan on the lines of SC/ST sub plan by allocating funds from central schemes.

He wanted caution to be exercised in the proposed enhancement of 12 percent quota for SEBC Muslims as it might invite fresh bout of litigation depriving the community of the existing 4 percent reservation. A survey should be done on the socio-economic and educational backwardness of Muslims in all the 10 Telangana district by renowned institutions such as TISS, CESS or ASCI. The quota can be enhanced based on the empirical evidence of the survey and after getting the matter examined by the State B.C. Commission.

Mr. Owaisi wanted immediate bifurcation of the State Wakf Board as continuing the existing Board for one year was against the provisions of the A.P. Reorganisation Act. He also suggested constitution of district level task forces for protection of wakf lands.

He wanted Urdu to be made joint official language of Telangana along with Telugu. A joint official language commission should be set up with adequate representation for Urdu members. The Majlis wanted strict implementation of the three language formula and separate DSC for Urdu teachers.
