Mail appeared after bid to disrupt COVA’s event

August 20, 2012 01:45 pm | Updated 01:45 pm IST - HYDERABAD

The nefarious email began circulating after the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists tried to disrupt COVA's joint Independence Day celebrations of India and Pakistan at the Exhibition Grounds in Nampally on August 14.

Even while the function was on, right wing activists, charging the organisers with planning to hoist the Pakistan national flag, tried to gatecrash the venue of the celebrations but the police arrived on time and detained them.

Tip-off

When asked the reason for their demonstration, Bajrang Dal city president B. Bharat Vamshi claimed that they received a tip-off from school students about the Pakistani flag being hoisted at the meeting. He alleged that the organisers had distributed pamphlets in some schools about hoisting of the Pakistan flag.

Organiser’s version

However, organiser of the meeting and COVA executive director Mazher Hussain refuted the allegations.

“It’s only a prize distribution ceremony for school and college students. These celebrations are being organised in different cities of India, Pakistan and across the globe to pray for peace and friendship in the region. No flags of any country were hoisted or displayed anywhere. Some people want to create trouble with an ulterior motive,” he said.
