‘Linganna shot in the leg before being killed’

The slain CPI(ML) New Democracy leader P. Lingaiah was found alive by the police in the forests near Rollagadda village of Bhadradri-Kothgudem district, after he was hit by a bullet in the leg, claimed president of the Civil Liberties Committee (Telangana), at a public meeting organised by the party in the leader’s memory here on Monday.

Sharing details from CLC’s fact finding tour to the location, Prof. Laxman said Mr. Linganna pitched a tent and stayed with six others closer to the forest, when the police zeroed in on the group from all sides in the early hours. All the six ran into the forests nearby, while Mr. Linganna returned to the tent for his kit bag, which delayed his escape.

Fleeing through the forest, he was hit in the leg, and collapsed, before handing over his weapon to his fellow comrade who came to check on him, Prof. Laxman said. The police soon found him, and killed him, he claimed.

The police also tried to kill a farmer who had been found closer to the spot, but arrival of his wife in the nick of time saved the farmer, Prof. Laxman said, elaborating on how the Rollagadda tribals showered the police with stones when they tried to carry Linganna’s body through the village.

The meeting saw many intellectuals express consternation, in the backdrop of the “encounter killing” and scrapping of Article 370, about how democracy is getting endangered at the Centre as well as in the State.

U. Sambasiva Rao from Bahujana Prathighatana Vedika said Mr. Linganna’s encounter should not be seen as an attack on an individual, but as an attack on Adivasis’ autonomy for which Mr. Linganna was fighting.
