All 704 railway stations under the jurisdiction of South Central Railway (SCR) will be 100% illuminated by LED lights by March 2018, General Manager Vinod Kumar Yadav said on Tuesday.

Addressing the National Energy Conservation Seminar at Rail Nilayam as a part of the Energy Conservation Week, he said the zone has been at the forefront in initiating energy conservation measures on traction, non-traction and diesel wings. It has also pioneered installation of energy efficient gadgets as LED lighting, brushless DC electric motor energy saving fans, inverter type ACs etc., with special focus is on generating power from renewable resources like solar, wind and day light pipe technology, he added.

SCR has spent ₹1,027 crore towards electrical traction energy, ₹1,725 crore towards diesel fuel and ₹107 crore for non-traction energy during 2016-17 even as there has been a 2.2% reduction in energy consumption. This was possible with the use of star-labelled electrical equipments, LED fittings in place of higher wattage fittings, energy-efficient pumps, provision of occupancy sensors, energy savers for A/C units and timers for water coolers, he said.

Principal Chief Electrical Engineer A.A. Phadke said SCR was rated best on Indian Railways for least specific energy consumption covering electric and diesel tractions. Guntakal is the first division on Indian Railways to complete 100% LED lighting of all 157 railway stations under its jurisdiction.

Earlier, the GM inaugurated an exhibition showcasing energy efficient equipment.
