Laxman floors young sailors at regatta

Even for someone who wields the willow with a distinct touch of class and authority against the best of the bowling attacks, it is a totally different experience when V. V. S. Laxman went for a ride in the boat as part of the efforts to promote regatta and also to keep the Hussainsagar lake clean.

When the elegant India cricketer stepped into the boat, the beaming faces of the young sailors, many of whom got the chance by virtue of winning the quiz competition held yesterday to sail with Laxman, said it all. They really loved the august company of an illustrious cricketer.

“Well, I have crossed this lake so many times since my childhood. But this is the first time I am into the lake and it has been a wonderful experience,” remarked Laxman later.

“It is equally pleasing to see so many youngsters take up this adventure sport. When we go abroad to play international cricket, we often look for adventure sport. So, I wish many more children take up this water sports and make it big,” Laxman said pointing to the lake which he reminded has a special place in the hearts of Hyderabadis.

“It is important for children to not only take up the sport but also enjoy. I am thrilled at their joy in going into the waters. This shows they cherish every moment of their competition here,” the elegant India batsman said.

“I would love to come back to the lake whenever I find time and also bring my children. This has been one of my best days in Hyderabad, honestly,” says a delighted Laxman.

The cricket superstar also lauded the efforts of Suheim Sheikh, president of Yacht Club of Hyderabad, for his concerted efforts to promote water sports and also to keep the lake environment-friendly. “Definitely, it is the responsibility of all of us to keep it clean so that we keep enjoying coming to the venue repeatedly,” Laxman pointed out. Later, Laxman gave away the prizes to the medallists in different categories.
