Three persons, who allegedly abducted and later freed city businessman Gajender Parekh after taking ransom of ₹1 crore, were arrested on Tuesday. Two other accused are absconding. Police have recovered over ₹35 lakh.

The three accused are aged between 19 and 22. Kingpin Mohd Almas (21) knew the victim for past four years. The other two arrested are Mohd Akbar (22) and Mir Shafeeq Ali (19).

Mr. Parekh owns an automobile finance company in Domalguda. Almas had a second-hand car selling business in the same locality and used to buy cars from Mr. Parekh, and was aware of how much money he made.

Almas hatched a plan to abduct Mr. Parekh and roped in Akbar, Shafeeq and two others. As per their plan, they met at Almas’ Moto Zone Motors office on Sunday afternoon and kept track of the businessman’s movements.

The victim came to a tea store near Almas’ office and around 11.30 p.m. when he left the store, Akbar and two others came in a car, landed blows on him and kidnapped him. Almas and Shafeeq kept tabs on their movement. They took him to Almas’ house at Misrigunj and demanded ransom of ₹3 crore from his family, which was reduced to ₹1 crore after negotiations.

Mr. Parekh called up his friend, Rahul, and requested him to arrange the money, without alerting him about being in trouble, police said. He asked Rahul to come near a school at Chirag Ali Lane and keep the cash bag on his car’s bonnet.

Almas and Shafeeq reached the spot on a bike, collected the ransom and alerted their accomplices. By then, Akbar and the two other aides dropped the blindfolded victim near a juice centre in Abids. Then, all of them met again at Almas’ house and split the money.

Mr. Rahul took his injured friend to a corporate hospital in Hyderguda. The family members, who had earlier decided not to alert the police, called Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Zone) P. Viswa Prasad around 4 a.m. on Tuesday and informed him about the kidnapping. Following this, Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said 11 teams were formed to nab the accused.

Based on description of the accused, police along with Task Force sleuths scanned through CCTV footage and other technical details, after which they arrested the three.
