Giving a major fillip to wrestling, widely perceived to be a poor man’s sport, the Sports Authority of Telangana State chairperson, A. Venkateshwar Reddy, hosted an invitation wrestling championship ‘KCR Kesari’ at Fateh Maidan indoor stadium as part of the birthday celebrations of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

In a way, it was also about reviving the good old memories when wrestling competitions on the adjacent ground (behind the existing tennis courts) used to draw huge crowds when ‘Andhra Kesari’ competitions were a regular feature.

“The whole idea is to promote the sport in a big way and we are really pleased with the kind of response to this meet. Next time, we will be planning to host a national-level meet,” SATS Chairman told The Hindu .

Interestingly, despite the existence of warring groups, the SATS chairperson seemed to be pretty successful in putting behind the bitter rivalry among them and host an event which goes a long way in rekindling hopes of the wrestlers who have been diligently training across many vyayamshalas . Even the crowd response was encouraging too, he said.

“Buoyed by the success and given the fact that they come invariably from the lower strata of the society, the SATS will recommend inclusion of wrestling as one of the disciplines to be considered for sports quota jobs in the State government,” Mr. Reddy pointed out.

Rich history

“This is a sport which is immensely popular and Hyderabad has a rich tradition of producing champions. Even now there is plenty of talent lacking the desired exposure,” the SATS top official said.

Yeh gharibon ka khel hai . Wrestling needs to be given full support on all fronts,” said Mr. Reddy.

He ensured that Telangana Legislative Council Chairman K. Swamy Goud and B. Vijay Kumar Yadav, President of Telangana Wrestling Association, and others graced the valedictory function where ‘KCR Kesari’ title winners were given Royal Enfield and Pulsar bikes.
