It was the shock of her life for IPS officer Safeer Karim’s wife Joicy when a battery of policemen in plainclothes walked into the room she was sitting in La Excellency coaching institute here at Ashoknagar Crossroads on Monday morning.
She was sitting with a laptop browsing something when the policemen, accompanied by some women police officers in uniform, entered the room. “Apparently, she initially didn't think we were from the police department but realised it is police when the laptop was taken from the table,” a police officer who took part in the raid said on Tuesday.
Rambabu, who runs La Excellency institute, was also sitting behind the laptop table in the room. Joicy reportedly broke down after realising that she was caught by the police while helping her husband who, hoping to get into the IAS, was writing Civil Services Mains exam in Tamil Nadu.
TN police team led by DCP Aravind detained both Joicy and Rambabu. They questioned them for several hours over the alleged fraud of cheating in the Civil Services exam, using Bluetooth. Their examination continued till Tuesday evening with breaks.
They were presented before the First Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Nampally in the evening before being flown to Chennai on transit warrant. “Rambabu was cited as witness in the case,” a Hyderabad police official said.
Investigators found that Karim’s mother was also in Hyderabad to take care of his infant son. Days before the Civil Services Mains exam began, Joicy, along with her son and mother-in-law, came to Hyderabad. They were provided accommodation in Rambabu’s flat in Gandhinagar.
Rambabu and Karim have known each other since they met at a competitive exam coaching centre in New Delhi.
They used to meet now and then after Karim came to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy for IPS training.
“Rambabu went to NPA to see August 15 parade there. That time Karim's wife used to live in a rented flat in Shivarampally close to NPA,” the investigators said. Rambabu hails from Ongole and completed his MBBS from Guntur Medical College.
He appeared for Civil Services exam. He made it to the interview but could not get selected for any service. Later, Rambabu started the coaching institute in Hyderabad.
