Ayodhya verdict day peaceful

Saturday turned out to be like any other normal day in Hyderabad, especially in the communally sensitive Old City, after Supreme Court’s judgment in the Ayodhya case.

Anticipating trouble and possibility of untoward incidents, unprecedented security cordon was thrown around the historic Charminar and Mecca Masjid, but the forces merely idled away their time.

Officials were closely monitoring the situation through surveillance cameras and tourists were allowed to visit the historic monuments and shopping centres.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar held several rounds of talks in the past one week with religious leaders and elders of both the Hindu and Muslim community to accept the SC verdict and maintain harmony.

“No untoward incident was reported and life was normal across the city. Citizens of Hyderabad have accepted the Supreme Court verdict,” a senior officer said.

Meanwhile, several hawkers and shopkeepers near Charminar maintained that the judgment won’t have any impact on their lives and they still have to work hard to make both ends meet .

“This being a weekend, we expect more customers and not worried about the disputes. I hardly remember what happened on December 6, 1992, and the fact is I have to earn money for the livelihood of my family,” said Rafeeq, a bangle seller near Charminar.

While another vendor said his children don’t know anything about the dispute and were asking him about the issue while watching a news channel.

Earlier, in the day, three activists of the Darsgah-e-Jihad-O-Shahaadat were picked up from their office in Moghalpura, while they were trying to hold a press conference on the verdict. They were taken to Kanchanbagh police station and let off in the evening.
