Police invoking MV Act in court since February last year

As many as 26 people were jailed in March and April in Hyderabad for letting their minor children drive. Joint Commissioner of Police Anil Kumar said the minors were caught during vehicle checking the police are conducting twice a week.

Counselling

“Parents are called for counselling and are also produced in the court. While minors are counselled, parents can receive a jail term lasting a few days,” said Anil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad.

The maximum jail term handed down has been two days in case of minors caught in the last two months, Mr. Kumar said, while adding that the police would increase the number of checks per week. Under provisions of Motor Vehicle Act, a vehicle-owner can be held responsible if a minor is caught driving, the official said.

The police began invoking provisions of MV Act in the courts since February this year after a series of accidents in January resulted in deaths of around five minors. In February, over 60 parents were jailed for letting their minor children drive.

Jail terms are also being handed down for drunk driving, more of which is now being witnessed, reportedly due to soaring temperature.

Film screening

On Friday, the Hyderabad Traffic Police also screened two films to create awareness about the risks of helmet-less driving and signal jumping. The one-minute-long short films, launched by Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar in presence of actors who acted in them, will soon hit the large screens.
