Two persons were arrested by Falaknuma police on Monday for allegedly running an international call termination and routing racket using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

Loss to telecom sector

Police said that in the last six years, the duo earned more than ₹1.44 crore by causing loss to the exchequer of the telecom sector and a threat to national security.

Eight SIM boxes, one laptop, three mobiles and a sedan were seized from their possession.

The accused Mohammed Amjad Khan approached a SIM cards’ retail seller Yousuf Hassan and requested him to provide pre-activated SIM cards to carry his illegal business, police said.

VoIP devices from China

Later, he procured the VoIP devices from China and started his business at a rented flat in Jahanuma and another in Kalapathar.

Derouted calls

“They used to deroute the international calls through VoIP devices and earn money from the callers,” Falaknuma police said.

The issue came to light only after the security wing of the telecom department analysed the ISD calls and lodged a complaint with the police.
