CPI (ML)-New Democracy has donated the bodies of its leaders to the Government Medical College here. The rare gesture has been widely appreciated.
The party donated three bodies to the college from April to June.
Family consent
In all three cases, it was done with the concurrence of family members.
In April this year, the body of senior leader and journalist Kola Narsimha Rao, 90, was handed over to the college, followed by that of Vemulapally Snehalatha, 64, wife of the party Central Committee member Vemulapally Venkatramaiah in May. On Thursday, the body of Kanneganti Narsimha Rao, 76, who passed away after a brief illness, was donated to the college.
Kola Narsimha Rao had wanted to donate only his eyes. But when the proposal to hand over his entire body was moved, his family members accepted it immediately.
Family members of Snehalatha, who was underground during the Emergency, along with Venkatramaiah, voluntarily came forward to donate her body. Ravi, son of Kanneganti Narsimha Rao, said his father wrote a poetry in 2007, wishing to donate his eyes and body.
Ravi, who is the Editor of Tolakari , a Telugu monthly on agriculture, and also the convener of Telangana Rythu JAC, said he himself and his wife Padma also had given willing letters to donate their bodies after their demise to medical colleges through a voluntary organisation.
“This is indeed a boon to our medicos. We supplied one body to the RIMS in Adilabad when it was in dire need for students for study. We brought one from Warangal when we had no body here a few years ago.
“The gesture of body donation is laudable,” said Chandrashekar, Associate Professor of Anatomy at the GMC here.
