At least four women were injured and few other policewomen sustained bruises as a result of a mild tussle after the IKP Community Animators lay siege to the Collectorate under the aegis of CITU district unit in Karimnagar on Monday.

Hundreds of women IKP Community Animators arrived from various parts of the district with demands such as minimum wages etc. They squatted in front of the Collectorate and obstructed the entry and exit of visitors demanding that a solution be drawn for their demands that included regularisation of their services.

Four women hurt

When the women protesters tried to enter the Collectorate, the police foiled their attempts. In the melee, at least four IKP women sustained injuries and fainted. Some other policewomen too sustained bruises.

The police called the 108 ambulance service and shifted the injured IKP women to a hospital for necessary medical assistance. Later, the police dispersed the agitating mob.

After a while, the officials assured the protesters to take the matter to the State government.

The IKP animators under the banner of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) lay siege to the Collectorate, here on Monday, demanding the government solve the promises made by Women and Child Welfare Minister Sunitha Lakshma Reddy to them in 2010.

The striking animators left the premises only after the District Revenue Officer Jagadeeswarachary and IKP Project Director Venkatesham assured them that the district administration on its behalf would add locally a little additional amount to their salary and forward the other demands to the government.

Addressing the gathering, CITU district secretary Ramesh Babu lamented that the animators have been working for a meagre monthly salary of Rs.800 and with no other benefits.

He said though the animators are striking work protesting in different forms for the last 15 days, the government is yet to respond.

Recalling the promises made by the Minister, he said that the animators were assured of a minimum of Rs.3,900 salary, besides job security. They were also told that they would be recognised as Village Assistants. It is very sad that the services of animators is yet to be acknowledged by the government, he alleged.

Demanding that the State government implement minimum wages, the staff of Indira Kranthi Patham (IKP) held a dharna in front of the Collectorate on Monday.

The agitation was led by CITU leader A. Mallesham. Addressing a gathering, Mr. Mallesham said that the agitation would be intensified if the government failed to address the problems of the IKP staff.

Their demands include not removing staff irrationally, providing job security and extending loans without interest. Later, a memorandum was submitted to the officials.
