Swedish home furnishings retailer major IKEA has decided to push back the opening date of its first India store in the city to August 9.

IKEA Retail India has decided to move the date as it needs time to live up to its expected quality commitments to customers and co-workers, a statement from the company on Friday said.

The announcement came with less than a week to go for the earlier announced opening date of July 19. It comes about 10 days after IKEA India CEO Peter Betzel met media persons at the upcoming 400,000 sq ft facility in the city and announced plans to open the facility on July 19.

“Our main priority is to create an inspiring and safe experience for both customers and co-workers. Opening the first Indian IKEA store in Hyderabad means a lot to IKEA and we want to offer the best possible meeting with IKEA for the many Indian customers”, Mr. Betzel said in the statement.

The company also sought to thank the Telangana (government) authorities for the support it has received on its journey to open the first IKEA store, the release said.

During the interaction earlier this month, Mr. Betzel said the store would showcase 7,500 products, big and small, and is being established after an elaborate exercise to ascertain the tastes and requirements of Indian households. The company has invested ₹1,000 crore on the facility, which includes a 1,000-seat restaurant. Also, the company has recruited 1,000 persons for the store here, with half of them women.
