Around 23 puppies and kittens from local breeds were saved from a harsh existence on the streets on Sunday and found themselves a home. They were taken home by enthusiastic families during a ‘Pet Adoption’ programme organised by Humane Society for Protection and Care of Animals (HSPCA) at Zoroastrian Club here. The day-long event was held to popularise acceptance of street dogs as pets and drew a good response from animal lovers of the city.

“The notion that only good breeds can be good pets is not true. Given a chance and with right training, local dogs can prove to be much better than their counterparts with a good lineage,” says Amrita Rizal of HSPCA.

Local breeds are also easy to manage and do not need much of attention or care as they have better immunity and can easily adapt to changing weather, she said.

She also said that dogs demand greater attention and if one does not have enough time to cater to their demands, they could instead opt for cats. HSPCA volunteers provide foster homes for rescued pets till they get a permanent home. “If you are not sure about adopting a pet, the best way to know is to give them a foster home for sometime. That way you can find out if you can manage a pet,” say Ajay and Jyotsna, a couple volunteering with HSPCA.

Apart from rescuing and putting pets up for adoptions, HSPCA volunteers also counsels owners about various aspects involved in maintaining a pet, from training to maintaining their health.
