A division bench of Hyderabad High Court comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavli on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the reluctance of the two State governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to take action and file report regarding the violation of Motor Transport Workers Act, 1961 and Andhra Pradesh Motor Transport Workers Rules, 1963 by private travel operators.

Work overload

The bench was dealing with case filed by K.V. Subba Reddy, who said that because of non-implementation of these rules, the workers are overloaded with work and this leads to accidents involving luxury buses.

He referred to the bus accident in Krishna district recently where several people died. The bench had called for reports from the two State governments. The bench said that if the reports are not filed by November 7, the Secretaries of Transport Department of both the States shall be present. The bench wondered why the governments are hesitating to take action for violation of Motor Transport Workers Act, 1961 and Andhra Pradesh Motor Transport Workers Rules, 1963.

The bench minced no words and then adjourned the case to November 7.
