HGA has world class golf course: IGU president

January 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:23 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Golf in the State capital is all set to enter into a bigger zone. The Indian Golf Union (IGU), which is currently holding its council meeting at the Hyderabad Golf Association (HGA) course adjoining the historic Golconda Fort and Quli Qutb Shahi Tombs, declared the venue to be “truly world-class”.

IGU is golf’s governing body in the country and its president Jaydeep Chitlangia said the Union government was looking at promoting golfing events to attract tourists and hence, better days ahead for the sport in India. “In this context, I must say this HGA course is fabulous and we have big plans,” he said.

“The IGU Council will finalise the calendar of about 70 events and HGA may get the privilege of being on its roster for the first time in 70 years,” he said.

Asadulla Pasha, Captain of HGA, says that the golf course had completed 18 holes recently and was on the verge of getting national recognition. “In order to attract national championships for the first time to HGA, the entire IGU council of over 20 members visited the golf course to assess its fitness for holding the championships,” he explained.

“The IGU Council will also be finalising the ‘camps of excellence’ and the international roster. Hyderabad will be one of the important centres for sure in future,” he added. Capt. Dayakar Reddy, joint secretary of HGA, points out that with the objective of luring youth in the sport, they had embarked on a mission going to schools to send their children interested in sport.

“The response has been very positive. Any student can pay Rs. 1,000 per annum to get a feel of the course regularly. Even for anyone interested in playing golf, all you have to do is to pay a very nominal Rs. 200 and enjoy the greens in the perfect ambience,” he explained.

HGA is also most likely to announce the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) event which will bring the best pro golfers in the country to our course for the first time.
