Manohara Chary (42), accused of hacking his daughter Madhavi and son-in-law Sandeep, had no intentions to attack the latter, said A.R. Srinivas, DCP West Zone.

He said that on Wednesday afternoon, Chary telephoned his newly-wed daughter asking her to come near Gokul cinema theatre in Erragadda, as he wanted to see her. However, she reached the place with her husband and minutes later Chary also arrived.

Soon, he attacked the couple with a sickle under the influence of alcohol, Mr Srinivas said. “He had no plans to attack Sandeep,” he confirmed. Chary was arrested by the SR Nagar police from his co-brother’s house in MS Maktha around 6.30 p.m. “During the preliminary investigation, we observed that the accused was intoxicated and decided to kill his daughter, as she married without his knowledge,” he said.

Denying the allegations that inter-caste marriage was the reason behind the gruesome attack, Mr Srinivas said, “The accused told us that he had no problem with inter-caste marriage. But, his only concern was Madhavi married Sandeep without informing him and he was angry over the same.” In fact Chary told police that he encouraged such marriages, the DCP said.

It was only on Wednesday morning he decided to eliminate his daughter and stole the sickle from a tender coconut vendor, when the latter was on a lunch break and attacked the newly-wed couple, he said. Further, Mr Srinivas said that for the past five days, the accused was consuming liquor without interruption and his breathe alcohol content was 357 mg/100 ml when tested at 7.15 p.m. However, Sandeep’s brother, Madhu, told the media that inter-caste marriage was reason for the attack. “He opposed their marriage as we belong to lower caste,,” he said.
