Govt.’s move to rein in coaching centres questioned

May 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:57 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The Competitive Examinations Coaching Centres Association has questioned the proposed move of the government to control coaching institutions arguing that they were neither associated with the government nor taking any assistance from it.

Association president Lingala Panduranga Reddy and secretary Marri Narender Reddy said the government issued an order in 1997 targeting the corporate colleges, but now there is an effort to bring private coaching centres under the rule, which is irrational.

The government can control private colleges as they are affiliated to a State Board, but private coaching institutions purely run on their calibre and no restrictions can be put on them. “Students will choose the best and reject the rest,” he said, speaking about the coaching institutions at all levels.

How can a District Educational Officer (DEO) regulate coaching institutions that are run by senior professors or teachers? He also argued that if quality teaching was imparted at college and university level, coaching institutions will not thrive and said that the government should concentrate on improving quality there than trying to rein in coaching institutions.
