Govt. releases datasets on transportation

Move to boost urban mobility solutions

In what could give a fillip to urban mobility solutions, the Telangana government on Tuesday released datasets pertaining to public transport in the State. The move is in line with the State’s Open Data Policy of 2016.

They were released on data.telangana.gov.in portal in General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), a widely accepted format used for public transportation. The format allows public transport agencies to publish their data, and also permits companies or developers to develop apps by using the data. The datasets are available for users to download.

The datasets on the portal include those of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited and the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS). The datasets of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation would be released in a few weeks.

Speaking to The Hindu, IT Secretary Jayesh Ranjan said open data can pave the way for improving urban mobility. “We have released transportation datasets today. People, including transport researchers, can access it, analyse it, and give suggestions on public transport,” Mr. Ranjan said adding that the datasets released on the portal was only the first step. Apart from transportation, Mr. Ranjan said efforts were under way to release large datasets on healthcare.

“What you are seeing now is government data. We are now going to crowdsource data, without compromising on its quality. Of course, checks and balances will be in place. For example, there have been dengue cases. Now, we can get more data by crowdsourcing. We are looking at a lot of healthcare-related data,” he said. The Telangana government has collaborated with Factly to make datasets public. According to Factly founder Rakesh Dubbdu, the GTFS format in which the data has been released would make it easier for those who use datasets to work on applications.

“We have been working for around six to eight months on this. Using open data, an integrated transport planner can be developed,” he said. While the datasets for HMRL and MMTS have been released, Factly, in partnership with TSRTC, would soon release exhaustive data on bus routes and the number of buses and schedules. “We have put in around 8,000 hours on TSRTC data. It will be released in a few weeks,” Mr. Dubbudu said.
