Goldsmith, forced to consume acid, dies

A goldsmith, who was allegedly force-fed acid by two robbers earlier this month, died while undergoing treatment at the Gandhi Hospital in early on Sunday.

On October 2, M. Mohan (39) of Dwarakmai Colony in Neredmet, was alone at his workshop when two strangers walked in and while one of them started a conversation, the other man picked gold ornaments weighing 10 tolas. Mohan runs a jewellery store-cum-workshop named Sri Balaji gold jewellery store at P.B. Nagar in Neredmet.

“He told us that when he protested the robbers forced him to consume the acid kept in the workshop,” Neredmet Inspector N. Chandra Babu said.

He claimed that the offenders later downed the shutter of his shop and left the place.

The same evening, he was rushed to a hospital for treatment where he died while undergoing treatment on Sunday.

“We have altered the Sections of the case to 302 (murder) of the IPC. Special teams are already on the job to nab the culprits,” the Inspector added.

Man tries to throw infant

into tank, arrested

A man named Jagdish from Karmanghat was caught by the police here on Sunday when he tried to throw a five-day-old baby girl in the Nalla Cheruvu at Uppal.

The infant has been reportedly born with physical disabilities. Locals had noticed the man moving suspiciously and caught him, after which he was handed over to the cops. The baby has been shifted to a government hospital.
