Rod pierces into back part of his neck

Jumping over the iron gate to enter his house proved fatal for a goldsmith as he slipped onto the sharp-edged steel rod of the gate at Mangalhat early on Wednesday.

The steel rod pierced through the neck of 40-year-old Anand Varma. Death was instant for him, said the police. Varma’s family members told the police that he used to come inside the house by jumping over the iron gate if it was locked.

The goldsmith returned home around 2.30 a.m. on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. “As the gate was locked, he tried to scale over it and jump inside,” the police said.

The wrought iron gate had iron rods with pointed ends on the top. While jumping over the gate, police believe, back part of his 'T'-shirt got stuck onto one of the rods.

“He apparently lost the grip and slid before a rod pierced into the back part of his neck,” the police said.

A neighbour Gopi got horrified on seeing Anand Varma hanging onto the gate and alerted his family members.
