Fear of floods grips riverside habitations in seven mandals of Bhadradri-Kothagudem

Though water level in the Godavari at Bhadrachalam has begun to slowly recede on Wednesday evening, flood alert remained in effect for the riverside habitations and other low-lying areas in seven mandals of the district. The danger mark is 53 feet.

At 6 p.m., water level hovered around 48.7 feet, slightly above the second flood warning level, in the temple town. It is expected to remain steady for the next 12 hours as weather forecast indicated slight drop in inflows from the upstream areas of the river, official sources said.

However, fear of floods continued to haunt people living in the habitations situated along the course of the river spread in seven mandals including Charla, Dummugudem, Bhadrachalam and other Agency mandals in the district.

The authorities have already shifted residents of Kotha Colony and AMC colony in Bhadrachalam to the relief camps after the backwaters of the Godavarai encircled the colonies situated in low-lying areas.

Two additional motors of 20 HP capacity and a generator have been pressed into service to pump out stagnated water at the Vista complex near the flood bank (karakatta).

Vehicular movement on Bhadrachalam-Kunavaram road remained suspended for the second day on Wednesday following flooding of a causeway at Murmur in Andhra Pradesh. The official machinery is on high alert to deal with any emergency.
