GHMC to retain garbage collection

June 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - HYDERABAD:

A meeting of elected representatives of Hyderabad City, chaired by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, unanimously decided against handing over the task of garbage collection to other agencies. They said it should be done by the GHMC itself.

The meeting, organised on Saturday as part of the Swachh Hyderabad programme, further decided to implement new methods for proper collection and reuse of debris generated while constructing new buildings and demolishing old ones. It was decided to have a committee on the removal of debris and other waste and garbage collection.

Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, Deputy Chief Minister Md. Mahamood Ali, Floor leaders of MIM and BJP in the Assembly, Akbaruddin Owaisi and K. Laxman respectively, and all other Ministers, MPs and legislators from the city attended the meeting.

The Chief Minister decided to set up a sub-committee of elected representatives for proper management of 77 nalas and drains as part of plans to revive the Musi river. He stated that about 700 million gallons per day (MGD) sewerage water was being treated and treatment of another 600 MGD would make Musi clean. He suggested that the authorities constitute sub-committees on drinking water supply and sewerage treatment.

Initially, legislators Mr. Laxman and Syed Amin Jaffri explained their experiences during the visits to Delhi and Nagpur civic bodies to study garbage collection and solid/liquid waste management. The Chief Minister promised that the government would implement the reports submitted by the committee. He directed GHMC authorities to keep the management of urban health centres with them.

Explaining the need for more civic amenities, the Chief Minister noted that the government would develop 200 model markets, 50 multi-level parking complexes, 175 bus-bays, 50 multipurpose function halls, 36 graveyards, modernisation/beautification of 36 tanks/ponds, construction of 2 lakh houses, 18 dhobi ghats, development of 150 parks, 1,000 playgrounds, 1,000 gyms and 1,000 e-libraries in a phased manner.

Meanwhile, the government issued orders constituting a high-level committee on the construction of multi-level flyovers and junctions as important places in GHMC.
