GHMC seeks to seal Uppal stadium for non-payment of property tax

A team of GHMC officials descended on Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday to seal the venue for what it claims was non-payment of property and other related taxes amounting to Rs. 12 crores.

However, the HCA officials, who were busy seeing off their president Arshad Ayub to Australia for the World Cup as manager of the Indian team, were said to be successful in warding off the threat of a 'lock-out'.

Significantly, HCA officials reveal that they had never paid the property tax stating that it is a sports venue. But, the GHMC has been insisting that since a lot of commercial activity takes place, property tax has to be paid.

"They have been visiting the Stadium for the last few days in this regard. We gave our viewpoint and made it clear the amount cannot be so much. We sought time till this month-end to sort out the issue amicably," HCA Secretary John Manoj informed.

Meanwhile, a highly reliable source also claimed that the GHMC took away a few chairs and a xerox machine. In any case, HCA avoided the major embarrassment in front of the Himachal Pradesh Ranji team which was scheduled to play at Uppal but is now playing Hyderabad at Gymkhana.
