Dust all over the city roads that is causing inconvenience to citizens and more particularly motorists was being attended to on a priority basis, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner Somesh Kumar said. He assured that the city stretches would be cleared of the dust in a week.
Mr. Kumar, who took charge last week, said the issue of improving city road conditions was high on his agenda and added, “I will strive to ensure good and clean roads in the city without any debris strewn around.” By December, he plans to have an improved road network and continue efforts to provide citizens the best of roads.
Immediate attention
Immediate attention was being paid to address the problem of potholes and patches that have developed on most of the city roads. “Last week’s rains spread over four days have caused a lot of damage and our engineering staff are working round-the-clock to address the problem and focus on quality work,” he said.
Most of the stretches vulnerable to water logging were already identified and a specific plan of action in association with consultants and agencies with required expertise on these issues would be worked out.
For immediate works, all the zones were asked to call for short term tenders and take up the works.
“My staff sought seven days but I have told them to complete the job in three days,” he said. The GHMC limits have a road network spanning 6,780 sq km of which nearly 6,480 sq km is with the civic body with the rest is managed by the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department and the National Highways Authority.
“Roads managed by the other two agencies are also not in good condition but citizens are not bothered under whose jurisdiction they fall, and the GHMC gets the first blame,” Mr. Kumar said, adding that to ensure uniform improvement of the city roads, there was a need to have all the roads under the jurisdiction of the civic body.
“We will try to ensure that these roads too come under the civic body or insist that at least their maintenance be handed over to us,” he said.
