Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi on Thursday demanded that the government freeze bank accounts of All India Industrial Exhibition Society (AIIES) for looking the other way in connection with fire safety measures. He alleged that it was indulging in misappropriation of funds.

Mr. Owaisi, who is in London, said the AIIES collects a large amount as fee from traders and charges for tickets from visitors, but has failed on all fronts to protect their lives and livelihoods.

The MIM floor leader raised questions on the AIIES’ fire-prevention preparedness and sought to know whether a fire drill or a mock evacuation procedure was ever performed.

He said the inferno that ravaged around 200 shops is on account of glaring lapses on the AIIES’ part.

Lashing out at the Society, the Chandrayangutta legislator said he would raise the issue in the next session of the Telangana State Legislative Assembly.

Reiterating his demand for a seizure of the AIIES’ bank accounts, he sought to know why there was a delay in responding to the fire.

He also said that the Numaish grounds does not have fire prevention measures and sought to know whether the AIIES had obtained a fire no objection certificate from the Fire Department.
