Focus on women safety in Cyberabad hostels

October 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Staying in Cyberabad will get safer than ever for women techies hailing from outside the city. Scores of working women hostels spread across Hi-Tec city and adjoining areas will now have to follow a set of guidelines aimed at transparency and enhanced safety of women employees.

The guidelines are expected to be released as a notification in a couple of weeks by the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate, which will also oversee its implementation.

The ‘Project Safe Stay’ is an initiative of the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC).

“Working hostels are an unorganised sector. Nobody knows how many hostels are there in this area and who is running them,” said Bharani Kumar Aroll, secretary, SCSC.

Registration must

“It was just being seen as a business all these days, but now we want the hostel owners to register with the police and adhere to the guidelines given to them.

This initiative will not only work as a deterrent for hostel owners who are not following rules but will also help smoother handling of any emergency situation related to women crime. We do not want to give a chance to any kind of vulnerability in Cyberabad,” he says.

The members of SCSC had undertaken a survey of about 50 hostels and a feedback from women employees before working towards formulating the guidelines.

Some of the guidelines will include installation of CCTV cameras at important locations in and around the hostel. Proper ratio of security personnel as per the hostel inmates, right proportion of women staff inside the hostel, easy entry and exit routes are also some of the other points that will be a part of the guidelines.

Another initiative

The SCSC will launch another initiative to help women IT employees deal with domestic and professional issues. As part of the project, Margadarshak, at least one female employee from an IT company will be trained to help other employees cope up with work pressure and family issues so as to prevent them from taking any extreme step or quitting jobs.

The ‘Margadarshaks’ will be trained professionally to not just provide proper solutions but also comfort the “troubled” employees.
