Undergraduate students at the National Institute of Technology’s city campus will have flexible courses, allowing them to choose a discipline outside of their coursework. The change, to be applicable from the forthcoming academic year, comes after a once-in-four-year review of the academic courses.
“Till now, a student would spend 30 hours a week studying his/her course subjects. Now, they will study it for 20 hours, and the remaining 10 will be for subjects from other courses they choose,” said G. Chiranjeevi Reddy, Associate Professor at NIFT.
He said the change was effected to ensure that students are not confined to a stream and thus have a flexible career. “The course work is based on a student’s interests now. It is called ‘portfolio working’. We are not training them for a particular field or industry,” Mr. Chiranjeevi Reddy explained.
He also said most students who graduate from NIFT, Hyderabad are hired by the companies or industries they intern at during the final semester of their course. “About 80 per cent of our outgoing students are placed like that, which is called the ‘pre-placement’ offer. For the rest, there is a common placement held every year,” he stated.
