Fire safety: No NOCs even in govt. schools

While the spotlight is on private schools for running without No Objection Certificates (NOC) from the Fire Prevention wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), government and government-aided schools are even worse, as not a single one among them has an NOC which certifies that fire-safety norms exist in an institute.

GHMC officials admitted that there are 181 government schools and 342 government-aided schools in Hyderabad district, out which not a single one has NOC from the Fire Prevention wing.

“We have not conducted inspections in those schools, but nor have their officials approached us,” said a senior official from the Fire Prevention Wing.

The issue of NOCs came up a few days ago after a three-year-old girl died in a school after she was crushed in the lift. However, the matter of fire safety at government and government-aided schools seems to have gone unnoticed, as GHMC officials have not even issued any notices to them. “Frankly speaking, most of them function from buildings which have only one floor,” said the official, when asked why they were unchecked.

A GHMC official, however, said that the onus is also on the District Education Officer (DEO) to look into the matter. “The DEO should also inspect government schools and write to the Fire Prevention wing if they notice anything. However, we will look into this issue,” he added. It may be noted that some government schools also run hostels in their premises, like the Girijan schools which house ST students,” said an official.

In the GHMC area, only 80 private schools have NOCs from the Fire Prevention wing, while more than 5,800 are running without it.
