Flames attributed to short circuit as the huts were drawing power illegally from overhead lines

A ten-year-old girl was charred to death while three others suffered burns after fire raged through a settlement at Sainagar Colony in L.B. Nagar on Saturday afternoon.

Close to 600 huts that were put up in 7.19 acres of government land were gutted rendering the hut dwellers homeless. Clothes, utensils, cash and other valuables were reduced to ashes in the fire that broke out around 3.10 p.m. On noticing the flames, the hutment dwellers ran helter-skelter leaving behind their valuables in their homes. The 10-year-old girl, Sandhya went into her house and locked it from inside despite her neighbours asking her to scamper to safety. The leaping flames enveloped Sandhya's house trapping her inside, and she was charred to death. Incidentally, the girl, who used to stay with her relatives in Musheerabad for studies, had come to her parents' house on the occasion of Holi and stayed back over the weekend.

K. Laxmmama (60), Sujatha (61) and Srinivas (22) escaped with injuries. While the two women were treated as out-patients, Srinivas was still undergoing treatment in a private hospital in L.B. Nagar where his condition is stated to be critical.

Fifteen domestic gas cylinders exploded in the incident leaving the hutments and residents in abutting colonies on the tenterhooks. “Cylinders flung into air exploded like bombs,” an auto rickshaw driver Ambaji said. L.B. Nagar ACP J. Amarender Reddy cited electrical short circuit as the main cause for the fire. Flames erupted soon after power supply was restored after 3 p.m. as many were drawing power supply through overhead lines . Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot after receiving a call around 3.10 p.m. and carried out fire fighting operation till 8 p.m.

Ranga Reddy District Joint Collector Sudershan Reddy said relief arrangements were made for affected hut dwellers in a nearby open place and community halls. “We have also decided to give Rs. 8,000 for those who lost their valuables and Rs.1.50 lakh to the bereaved family,” he added.
