Vegetable growers from Rangareddy and Vikarabad districts were detained by the Trimulgherry police on Wednesday after they tried to stage a demonstration at the office of Bowenpally Agriculture Market Committee demanding redressal of their grievances.

“We have detained 71 vegetable farmers hailing from Moinabad, Chevella, Maheshwaram and other parts of Vikarabad, who tried to stage a protest in batches since morning. They were shifted to Bowenpally police station,” said Trimulgherry In-Charge Inspector B. Sravan Kumar.

The farmer gave ‘Chalo Bowenpally’ call to highlight the alleged injustice done to them by the hamalis and officials of the market committee. They said the hamalis were refusing to carry their produce on the grounds that each bag should weigh only 50 kg, and not 80 kg.

“The hamalis were refusing to handle the bags that are above 50 kg. However, on Tuesday, the officials asked the hamalis to lift 80 kg bags till the government takes further decision on the matter,” the police said.
