The Election Commission of India has accepted the request made by the State government to allow it to pay compensation to the victims of the ghastly bus accident at Kondagattu in Jagtial district.

The road mishap claimed 62 lives and resulted in injuries to over 50 people and the EC, in its letter to the Chief Electoral Officer, said that the payment could be made subject to the condition that the amount should be given directly to the families of the victims. Steps should be initiated to ensure that there was no publicity for the payment of the compensation and that no political functionary should be involved.

Sources said after the consent of the commission, the government was making arrangements to distribute ₹5 lakh each to the families of the 62 victims who died and ₹2.5 lakh each to the over 50 people who suffered injuries in the mishap.
