Draw inspiration from China in improving green cover: KCR

May 05, 2015 10:02 am | Updated 10:02 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has asked people to draw inspiration from the people China in turning the State green by taking up plantation on a large-scale under the ‘Haritha Haaram’ programme taken up by the government.

Speaking at a public meeting at Ibrahimpatnam near here on Monday, he stated that people of China had planted over 500 crore saplings/seedling to contain the spread of the Gobi desert and succeeded in it. Similarly, the State Government is planning to increase the green cover in the State to one-third of its total geography from the present 25 per cent.

It is possible by planting 120 crore saplings in non-forest areas and 110 crore saplings in the forest areas over the next three years. It could be achieved by taking up about 40,000 plantation in every village each year. Rejuvenating forests and increasing its extent meant bringing back rains to fill tanks and reservoirs to get good crops and sending back monkeys and other animals trespassing into human habitations into the wild, Mr. Rao said.
