June 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Domestic workers demanded implementation of minimum wages by Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments failing which they threatened to go on strike. According to the members of Domestic Workers’ Union, Telangana State and Domestic Workers’ Forum India, a minimum wage of Rs. 6,038 has to be paid to a worker which hardly is the case in reality.

Addressing a press conference on this issue on Monday, Varghese Theckanath, Director, Montfort Social Institute, said as per a survey conducted recently, almost 90 per cent of domestic workers in 11 towns of AP and Telangana are not paid minimum wages. He said that most of the workers are not treated well by their employers.

It was also announced that International Domestic Workers’ Day will be celebrated on a grand scale on Tuesday, June 16 at Montfort Institute in Uppal.
