Doctors at Apollo perform complex surgery

A team of cardiothoracic surgeons at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderguda, on Saturday claimed to have performed a complex surgery to clear potentially life threatening tumours in the heart of 46-year-old Kota Nageswara Rao from Kothagudem.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Venkata Reddy Karri, consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, and others.

Mr. Nageswara Rao was admitted to the hospital following sudden paralysis of the left side of the body. On evaluation through ECHO cardiogram, the doctors found that he had intra cardiac tumours in both left and right arterial cavities of the heart – known as Biatrial myxomas.

Doctors in a press release explained that myxomas were usually found in one atrium and was very rare to have myxomas in both the atriums. After further evaluation, the doctors revealed that paralysis was due to lodging of tumour fragments in the brain. The breakaway fragments from the heart tumour were carried with the blood stream to the brain.

Dr. Venkata Reddy Karri and his team performed the surgery for over three hours to clear both atriums of the tumours. Extreme precautions were taken during the surgery, as slight movement of the heart, could cause fragments to dislodge and move to vital organs of the body leading to complications like brain stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and also death during operation. The doctors announced that Mr. Rao had fully recovered and was going about with his daily routine, according to the press release.
