October 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Telangana Director General of Police Anurag Sharma has extended support to police reforms and hoped they would be implemented soon.

The DGP released the special issue of Lok Satta Times on the subject of police reforms to mark the Police Martyrs Day at his office here on Wednesday.

Agreeing with the views expressed by Lok Satta Party founder Jayaprakash Narayan on police reforms in an article in the magazine, the DGP acknowledged that Dr.Narayan had done an in depth study and submitted several reports for police reforms but it would take time to implement them, he said.

Dr. Narayana also released a copy of special issue of Lok Satta Times at party office in Begumpet. The reluctance of politicians to let go of control over police system was complicating the implementation of reforms, he added.

Police reforms were not for policemen but for people and they too should exert pressure for bringing these reforms for their own safety, he said. Some of the key police reforms are separating crime investigation from law and order wing and making it an autonomous unit with accountability. Recruiting only persons of officer cadre to the investigation wing, increasing the strength of police by 50 per cent, setting up an independent prosecution wing and local courts for every 50,000 population are other reforms.
