Dattatreya promises relief to jewellers

January 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya assured jewellers of Secunderabad that he would work to free them from the alleged harassment of the Legal Metrology Department.

Traders affiliated to the Secunderabad Gold, Silver Jewellery and Diamond Merchants Association told the Minister that a Government Order allowed the department to penalise traders if they detect errors in weight measurements in the order of milligrams. They said available weighing machinery was precise to the order of 10 milligrams, and could show variations in this magnitude.

Mr. Dattatreya met traders on Sunday when he participated in the association’s 80{+t}{+h}anniversary celebrations. “The minister responded favourably to our representation,” said M. Ramarao, the association’s treasurer.
