On an average, three persons riding bikes lose their lives in accidents on the roads of the State capital every day.
An analysis of road accidents data shared by the Hyderabad traffic police indicates that the city roads continue to be a death trap for road users and two-wheelers turned out to be the most unsafe mode of transport.
Till July 26 this year, as many as 646 lives were lost in 605 road accidents reported in the city.
“Out of the two-wheeler occupants who died, 382 were not wearing helmet and majority of the deaths were reported in April and May,” the police data indicates.
While the numbers of road accidents shows that very little has been done for the safety of road users, traffic police claim that they are conducting many traffic education and awareness camps in three police commissionerates — Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda — to educate commuters on traffic rules.
The traffic police of the three commissionerates slapped over 36 lakh challans on commuters for riding without helmet, while 1.87 lakh tickets were issued to bikers for overspeeding and dangerous driving.
The police booked 4,630 minor bike riders, of which only 10 cases were registered in Rachakonda and 1,476 in Cyberabad, while the remaining 3,144 underage drivers were booked in Hyderabad.
“Traffic police of the three commissionerates have booked 40,80,477 cases against traffic violations by two-wheeler drivers,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar.
